About The Artist

Thomas Joshua Cooper is one of the most highly regarded landscape photographers in the world. He is well known for the extraordinary lengths he goes to in order to make his images, spending weeks and months, even years traveling into the wilderness and to the far corners of the world to make a single image. Anecdotes about the hardships he has put himself through are plenty; how he nearly drowned on several occasions and the time he was kidnapped. His ongoing series The World’s Edge recently took him on a 2-year voyage to the polar regions of the Atlantic Basin.

Cooper has always emphasized that his images are made not taken or shot and the final stage in the process takes place in the dark room where he makes each print with the skill that has made him a legend.

Cooper has had major museum exhibitions all over the world. He resides in Glasgow where he founded the Fine Art Photography Department at Glasgow School of Art in 1982. He is now a senior researcher and professor at the faculty.
